As we all know by now, Unity teaches us to pray in the affirmative. Simply put, instead of asking for some force outside of ourselves to give us something in the future, we instead affirm that we already have whatever we need in the present. It’s very different from the way that most of us were taught to pray by pleading with a God “out there” to fix some condition in our life.
That said, I do find myself asking for help in my prayers. I don’t ask for any outside power to change something in my life. Instead, I ask for guidance to see more clearly what is mine to do and to engage my inner powers of Understanding and Wisdom to lead me to solutions to whatever I am interpreting as a problem.
I also ask for help from my spirit guides. For example, when I am engaged in a creative endeavor, such as writing a song, and I am having trouble finding the right words or getting the music to flow in a way that satisfies me, I often put the project aside overnight and ask my guides to send me some inspiration. Upon waking up, I inevitably find the perfect lyrics or the most pleasing melody has come to me.
So, you might say, “Wait a minute, Catherine. Didn’t you say you don’t ask for help from outside yourself? Aren’t your spirit guides separate beings?” To which I say, “yes and no”.
I experience my spirit guides as a part of me in the same way that I know I am one with all beings, all creation. My guides are my “better angels”, the facets of me that possess greater Intelligence because they have a more elevated perspective. They are part of my inner Divinity. When I commune with the world of pure Spirit in prayer and meditation, I am tapping into those facets of myself that vibrate at a higher frequency and have access to Knowledge beyond what my human mind can grasp.
When I ask, it is with faith that I am divinely guided and abundantly blessed in all ways, always.
