Composting combats climate change on three critical fronts. First, by removing food waste from landfills, we reduce our trash volume by about 40-60% which extends landfill life and reduces heavy machinery required to handle material. Secondly, food waste in landfills is also a high producer of noxious, planet-warming methane gas. Methane is 28x worse than carbon dioxide in capturing heat in the atmosphere. Over 40% of waste in USA municipal landfills is food waste, and landfills are the third largest human-related produce of methane gas. By diverting this food waste away from our local landfill to the Reunity Soil Yard, ensures that we transform this material into beneficial, healthy soil amendments and compost instead (using a process that doesn't release methane into the atmosphere). Third, when the finished compost is spread and seeds are planted, the ability for that area to sequester carbon from the atmosphere (where there’s too much) down into the soil (where we need it) is activated, improving climate resiliency in our community.
Different available ways to compost at Reunity Resources in Santa Fe:
1. Doorstep composting: You are given a 4 gallon lined bucket to fill with scraps. Reunity Resources will then swap it with a clean empty bucket for a weekly charge of $39 a month or $22 for a biweekly pick.
2. Keep a plastic shoe box in your refrigerator or freezer to collect scraps and drop off at 1829 San Ysidro Crossing.
3. Or, purchase a container and compostable bag liners ( like the ones we use at church) and deposit the bag at the bins at San Ysidro Crossing.
